New Year, New Stories

Mahogany Journal presents New Year, New Stories, a mini writing workshop series for +65 South Asians above 18 years old. Conducted over Zoom, the two workshops “Unique, Universal” (Poetry) as well as “Views, Viewpoints” (Short Story) will be suited for those looking to equip themselves with new techniques to spruce up their writing.

Unique, Universal (Poetry)

Friday, 12 February 2021
2PM to 5PM
S$25

One common advice within writing circles is that the more specific we are, the more universal our words become. Often, generalising our experiences does not create resonance for the readers. With that in mind, this workshop will focus on exploring the relationship between the details of unique experiences and universal resonance. Participants will analyse both local and global poetic texts that contribute to such a contradictory relationship between poets and readers. Along with Jaryl, Mahogany Journal’s Poetry Editor, participants will be led through fundamental writing exercises that allow them to bridge the unique confessions of their lives with the universal appreciation of their readers.

All confirmed participants can submit a poem of not more than 2 pages for written feedback from Jaryl.

Views, Viewpoints (Short Story)

Saturday, 13 February 2021
2PM to 5PM
S$25

It is often said that the opening lines of a story are what determines whether it is a success. This workshop will hence focus on the art of crafting a good introduction. After a brief overview on how to structure a short story, participants will read and discuss opening excerpts from regional and global works. Together with Mahogany Journal’s Fiction Editor, Prasanthi, they will unpack elements that are necessary to an introduction and learn about tactics that different writers have employed to engage their reader. Through a set of guided exercises, participants will also have the opportunity to write and perfect their introductions.

All confirmed participants can submit the first 500 words of a single short story draft for written feedback from Prasanthi.

To sign up, please drop us an email at editors@mahoganyjournal.com by 10 February 2021 and indicate your interest as well as preferred mode of payment (PayNow or PayLah! only).

Payment is only to be made upon receipt of confirmation email. In the unlikely event of cancellation due to extenuating circumstances or insufficient sign-ups, all participants will be fully refunded.
